Treatment of Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)

Saffron for the Treatment of Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)

Premenstrual syndrome is not only a physical change in the body but also comes with mental and behavioral changes like mood disorders and depression. PMS is the most common health issue that women experience in their reproductive age. The premenstrual syndrome and premenstrual dysphoric disorder PMDD (a more severe case of depression) are somewhat associated with the production of neurochemical serotonin that brings the change in the mood. Serotonin can balance and disturb mood stability and is manufactured in the brain from the amino acid called tryptophan.

There are many medicines women can use for the effective treatment of PMS and PMDD. However, taking pain killers during and before the menstrual cycles for the menstrual cramps can cause side effects. But there is no need for using chemicals. A good diet and a home remedy can give you relief from having such troubles. The study that is mentioned below will clear your doubts about saffron use in periods and in the treatment of PMS and PMDD.

The study

Some doctors, after clinical trials, suggested that saffron can treat mild to moderate depression and minimize the symptoms of PMDD. In this study, the saffron they have used was identified by the Department of Cultivation and Development, Institute of Medicinal Plants, Tehran, Iran. 15 mg extract of dried stigmas of Crocus sativus was encapsulated and these capsules were given to the women aged between 20 to 45, twice a day for at least 6 months. The women were randomly assigned and each of their menstrual cycles was recorded. These women’s previous mental health was also recorded with the severity of PMS. The effect of this treatment was comparing the scores from two reports: The Premenstrual Daily Symptom Report (DSR) and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS).

Results

There were a total of 4 menstrual cycles in which the group of 50 women underwent the screening. These women have divided equally i.e. 2 groups of 25 women. 1 group is randomized for placebo treatment and the others for saffron treatment. In the first two cycles, there were no noticeable differences recorded but in the third and fourth cycle, there was an improvement in the women among the saffron group. The 50% reduction of severity in symptoms was documented after screening.

This study turned out that a saffron menstrual support campaign can bring out a significant change in this health issue among women. With the known and documented health benefits of saffron, it is clear that the use of saffron in periods makes your days much better than having medicines and placebo treatments.

You do not need to buy saffron capsules, you can use the saffron threads and make an extract at home to pour some drops in your tea as saffron tea is better than the tea you are drinking daily. You also can drink warm saffron milk tea at night and make your own suggested way with a little pinch every day to calm your nerves down and to get long-term relief.
