Saffron for the Treatment of Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)

In this study, the saffron they have used was identified by the Department of Cultivation and Development, Institute of Medicinal Plants, Tehran, Iran. 15 mg extract of dried stigmas of Crocus sativus was encapsulated and these capsules were given to the women aged between 20 to 45, twice a day for at least 6 months. The women were randomly assigned and each of their menstrual cycles was recorded. These women’s previous mental health was also recorded with the severity of PMS. The effect of this treatment was comparing the scores from two reports: The Premenstrual Daily Symptom Report (DSR) and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS).
There were a total of 4 menstrual cycles in which the group of 50 women underwent the screening. These women have divided equally i.e. 2 groups of 25 women. 1 group is randomized for placebo treatment and the others for saffron treatment. In the first two cycles, there were no noticeable differences recorded but in the third and fourth cycle, there was an improvement in the women among the saffron group. The 50% reduction of severity in symptoms was documented after screening.
This study turned out that a saffron menstrual support campaign can bring out a significant change in this health issue among women. With the known and documented health benefits of saffron, it is clear that the use of saffron in periods makes your days much better than having medicines and placebo treatments.
